NEW DELHI: January 30, 2009

GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN TO HAND OVER AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY TO THE ROYAL BHUTANESE GOVERNMENT THROUGH “THE PROJECT FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED FARMERS (2KR)”

1. The Government of Japan will hand over Agricultural Machinery to the Royal Government of Bhutan through “the Project for Underprivileged Farmers (2KR)”, amounting to 210 million yen grant assistance (approximately 2.3 million US dollars). Mr. Hisashi Sakata, First Secretary, Embassy of Japan in New Delhi, will attend the handing over ceremony to be held at the Ministry of Agriculture, Thimphu, Bhutan on 30th January, 2009.

2. Under the project, 141 Two Wheel Tractors and Attachments, ploughs for tractors, spare parts, etc., will be provided to Agricultural Machinery Centre (AMC) for further delivery to farmers in Bhutan.

3. The Government of Japan hopes that this grant assistance would help the development of Bhutanese agriculture, especially rural areas and underprivileged farmers, and also contribute to the development of Bhutanese economy and social activities.
